Irish Desert Pubs To Drink At Home
Irish people are leaving the pubs and choosing to drink in their own homes, resulting in the closing of almost 1,000 pubs in the last three years.
Recently released figures have revealed the number of off-licences in Ireland has tripled in the last seven years to 2,000 stores.
The huge increase is being connected to the Irish Government’s decision in 2000 to begin liberalising the off-licence drinks trade, and compounded by the smoking ban.
The number of off-licences in Dublin alone have shot up from 274 to 863, and off-licences now account for more than half of the total drinks trade in Ireland.
Fine Gael TD Charles Flanagan obtained details on the additional number of licences granted in a parliamentary question to the Department of Finance.
The minister accused the Government of allowing alcohol to become more widely available than ever.
"The liberalisation of off-licence regulations resulted in far easier access. When the government moved to deregulate the industry, they moved too fast, too soon, and now we have petrol being sold as an ancillary to alcohol across the country," he said.
The closure of pubs and availability of alcohol is also being blamed for the current level of underage drinking experienced throughout Ireland’s main cities and towns.

A new Road Safety Authority (RSA) report has revealed that alcohol contributed to 38% of all fatal road collisions between 2008 and 2012. Overall, there was 983 fatal incidents which claimed the lives of 1,077 people. Out of these, the forensic details of 867 cases were exanimed to identify their cause.

Gardai and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have launched a summer drink driving campaign after new figures revealed Irish road deaths have risen by 15% in 2016. A total of 86 people have died on the roads this year, with 11 more deaths compared to the same period last year.

Decision To Overturn Breath Testing Welcomed
The Court of Appeal has overturned a ruling saying that breath tests must be in English and Irish, saying it brings "much needed clarity". A ruling that breathalyser test statements were not valid if printed in the English language only had held up 1,400 alleged drink driving prosecutions and caused confusion over the last few months.
